I. Michael Leitman, M.D., F.A.C.S. has joined the Beth Israel Medical Center’s Department of Surgery as Vice Chairman and Director of the Surgical Residency Program.  He served previously as the Program Director and Chief of Surgical Critical Care at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.  Prior to that, Dr. Leitman was the Physician-in-Charge of Surgical Education and Program Director and Chief of Surgical Critical Care at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY.  In addition to treating patients in the Surgical ICU, Dr. Leitman treats patients with morbid obesity, and complex surgical oncological problems, including tumors of the skin, soft tissue, breast, endocrine organs and upper and lower gastrointestinal tracts. 

Dr. Leitman earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine.  He also completed an internship and residency in general surgery at the New York and Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Campus.  His training also includes a fellowship in surgical critical care at North Shore University Hospital. 

Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Leitman is career surgical educator of medical students, residents and fellows.  He is a member of numerous professional organizations and has authored more than two dozen peer-reviewed publications.  He has presented at several national and international surgical meetings and has served on the editorial boards of surgical and critical care publications.
