SURGICAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

All PGY-1 positions are filled through the National Resident Match Program (NRMP) with the electronic residency application service (ERAS). All applications will be reviewed through ERAS. Criteria for categorical and preliminary candidates: applicants with minimum USMLE scores of 93% will be considered. The J-1 Visa will be sponsored, but it is the applicant’s responsibility to aggressively follow through on the application process and be ready to start work on June 26, 2009, with all papers finalized. Applicants must apply for the USMLE's ECFMG certificate before December 2008 in order to receive your ECFMG certificate in time to begin the program on June 26, 2008. Our application deadline is November 7, 2008.

On occasion, advanced positions at the PGY-2 or PGY-3 level become available for residents desiring one or two years of surgical training.

GENERAL INFORMATION

House Staff Operative Log Documentation
At present we participate in the ACGME web based recording keeping program. Based on the requirements of the ACGME's Residency Review Committee, each resident maintains a record of all cases in which he or she participates. Recording of the residents' operative experience is kept up-to-date with the help of the program manager. Each house staff officer's experience is periodically reviewed to ensure a complete and balanced exposure to the components of general surgery is obtained.

Ginzburg and Stoller Awards

Each year the Attendings in the Department of Surgery are asked to nominate two residents whom they feel merit the honor of receiving the prestigious Leon Ginzburg Achievement Award and the Norman E. Stoller Award.

The Ginzburg Award is for a current chief resident, completing the Surgical Residency Program, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and surgical skills.  This year’s award went to Kelly Ann Rippey, MD.

The Norman E. Stoller Award is presented to a preliminary house staff member who will be leaving the program on June 30th.  This resident has shown outstanding qualities of devotion and dedication displayed to their patients.   This year’s recipient is Cormac O’Neill, MD.
